JD Vance to Lead New Anti-Fraud Task Force Targeting California Corruption – Vows to Make Gavin Newsom “Pay a Heavy Price” for “Devastating Consequences”

Vice President JD Vance has been tapped to lead a groundbreaking federal anti-fraud task force aimed at rooting out corruption, welfare abuse, election irregularities, and massive government waste in Democrat-run states — with California designated as ground zero for the crackdown.
The announcement, made during a White House press briefing Thursday, fulfills a key demand from voters who have long called for accountability and real consequences for states accused of draining taxpayer dollars for decades through broken programs and lax oversight.
“The American people are tired of watching their hard-earned money vanish into black holes of fraud and mismanagement,” Vance said in a statement. “California has become the poster child for this disaster — billions lost to welfare scams, illegal immigrant benefit schemes, election manipulations, and unchecked spending. We’re putting an end to it. No more looking the other way.”
Vance, 41, the Ohio senator-turned-VP known for his hard-hitting style and willingness to confront the political establishment, is seen as the perfect choice for the role. The task force will operate under the Department of Justice with support from the FBI, IRS, and Department of Homeland Security, empowered to investigate, audit, and prosecute cases of systemic fraud.
California — with its massive $325 billion budget and ongoing battles over homelessness, crime, high taxes, and population exodus — will be the initial focus. D.O.G.E. estimates released last month put the state’s fraud losses at $250 billion over five years, including $55 billion in unemployment scams, $100 billion in Medi-Cal fraud, and $26 billion in unaccounted homelessness spending.
Vance did not mince words when addressing Governor Gavin Newsom directly.
“Gavin Newsom is a dangerous ideologue,” Vance declared. “I will make him pay a heavy price for the devastating consequences he has caused — the wasted billions, the ruined lives, the failed cities. He represents everything wrong with one-party rule, and we’re coming for accountability.”
Newsom’s office fired back immediately, calling the task force “a politically motivated witch hunt” and “an abuse of federal power to target blue states.” A spokesperson said: “California will not be intimidated. We will fight this in court and protect our sovereignty.”
The task force’s mandate includes:

  • Auditing welfare and healthcare programs for fraud.
  • Investigating election irregularities, including ballot harvesting and non-citizen voting claims.
  • Probing illegal immigrant benefit schemes tied to sanctuary policies.
  • Recovering misspent funds through civil forfeiture and criminal prosecutions.
Democrats have condemned the initiative as “authoritarian overreach.” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries tweeted: “This isn’t about fraud — it’s about punishing states that won’t bow to Trump. We’ll see them in court.” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called it “a MAGA revenge tour funded by taxpayers.”
Conservative leaders praised the move. House Speaker Mike Johnson said: “JD Vance is tough, smart, and fearless — exactly who we need to drain the California swamp.” Former President Trump posted on Truth Social: “Finally — real accountability for Newsom’s disasters. Make them pay!”
Legal experts say the task force could face constitutional challenges under the 10th Amendment, but Vance’s team argues federal funds tied to state programs give Washington broad investigative authority.
For millions of Californians watching their state struggle, the task force represents a long-overdue reckoning. The era of no accountability may be over.
And for Gavin Newsom, the price could indeed be heavy.
